Hi Frnds,

I am using Oracle 10G DB Linux version.
We were creating one user in the server as there was no space in the machine the user creation failed. So we thought of removing some files. There is a file on machine with .dmp extension ,we thought it as backup/dump file and then removed that.It didn't give any error/warning while deleting .After deleting we were looking into the space but there is no improvement ,so we rebootedthe machine and we got some good amt of space, felt very happy .But unfortunately when we started the db it was looking into the file which we deleted and is not starting up.

Then we came to know that it is not the .dmp file and it is .dbf file of existing user which was created with wrong extension .I am thinking that it is looking forthe corresponding dbf file while starting and as it is removed it is throwing error. Please correct me if i am wrong.

So,my question is "Is there any way to start the DB or do we need to reinstall the ORacle".

Immediate help would be appreciated.

Regards,
GRK

Nothing that i know about.
If you are not worried about the data, just start over.
create a new database.

Or if you not worried about the lost datafile (and the corresponding data )
you cant try this.
sys@9i > startup
ORACLE instance started.

Total System Global Area 504858576 bytes
Fixed Size 731088 bytes
Variable Size 167772160 bytes
Database Buffers 335544320 bytes
Redo Buffers 811008 bytes
Database mounted.
ORA-01157: cannot identify/lock data file 4 - see DBWR trace file
ORA-01110: data file 4: '/u01/app/oracle/oradata/mutation/tools01.dbf'

sys@9i > shutdown abort
ORACLE instance shut down.
sys@9i > startup mount;
ORACLE instance started.

Hi Sunil,

Thanks for your suggestion..

Well the thing is it is not the production server it is just a test server .We generally have the backups in the same machine but for this we don't have a backup as we are having replicas of the same instance in many other machines. We were in need of this DB but it is not starting coz of the file which was missing,so apporached you ppl so that i can get some info.

Here the file which we deleted is not so important but the starting of DB is more important as there are many other instances in that machine. So,Mahesh has given the procedure to start DB.

I do agree with you Sunil cause i am having very little exposure to DBA concepts.

Regards,
RK
