I am receiving an ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist.

We are using Oracle 8.17. Here is the interesting part: we are not getting the error on NT workstations, but we are getting the error on laptops with win98. Also, Occasionally we are able to connect using the laptops!

If anyone can shed some light on this please help.

hello,
by assuming that the listener is up and running and also the database is up and running...coming to u r 98 clients ...See if u can ping the remote machine in which DB is present..
I mean C:>Ping Host_Name
see if it is successfully ping..Once it is then Open the Hosts file in 98 o/s which will be in c:windowssystem32driversetc and see if the corresponding name and IP addresses are same in that..IF they are not Edit them and then configure the TNS for that ..
I am sure Problem will be solved...

Thanks sai, I found the problem to be that win98 did not take the host name like winNT does. It needed the IP address. thanks!
