I am new to oracle DBA, and am being caught out by the many "gotchas".
Using the em console, I chose the most basic "schedule oracle-suggested backup". for the username, I put in the oracle unix user name, for lack of any guidance. I have no idea if this is correct, but it does have full access to all the oracle directories and is in the DBA group.
When I try and schedule the job, I get this:
ORA-20446: The owner of the job is not registered ORA-06512: at "SYSMAN.MGMT_JOBS", line 168 ORA-06512: at "SYSMAN.MGMT_JOBS"
I have not create any "shadow" oracle user in the actual DB. How can a unix user have oracle "SYSMAN.MGMT_JOBS" permissions?
Any ideas?

Hi, Ive been using oracle exclusively for about 20 years, but until now have never had to setup backups, as Ive always managed development databases and if we have a problem I just rebuild the schema and data from my scripts (I'm actually the lead developer).
I have just finished reading "Oracle Database 11g, The complete Reference", but found its chapter on backups fairly useless. Ill order some better books.
The sysman/log is a good tip, but the single file in it only contains:
TransX Loading....
Type stuff.
I'll take your advice and explore RMAN command line. So much for being quick or easy to setup the most basic scheduled backup possible.
